State Board Set.

So, I am in week three of school and we were talking about salon business and we are practicing on the state board set. Now the state bard set is the last part of the state board test. If you don’t know what the state board test is; it is the test you take for your state to receive your cosmetology license. The state board test consists of a written test and a practice session. In this session you have to demonstrate different haircuts, blow dry, three different curls using a curling iron, how to hot comb the hair, and the last thing is the state board set. The state board set consists of showing four different techniques on one head. Splitting the head in four the front has a four piece roller set, the right side is a set of pin curls; the left side is a set of cold wave rods and the back of the head we have to do finger waves. I took pictures of my set I will also have a description of what the item and style is.

So as you can see here the head is split up in 3 different sections. The center section is used for the four rollers going down the head.

The right side of the head is used for pin curls. Pin curls are another way of curling the hair. It’s done by taking sections of hair and rolling them up clock wise and counters clock wise pinning them at the ends. When they dry and are released it make a really nice curl.

The left side is used for cold wave rods. Cold wave rods are used as another form of permanent waves. You would use a piece of tissue paper called hair wraps for the ends of the hair to protect and keep the ends in place. And wrap the hair around the rod with the paper. Now you would use chemicals with it so that it would make the curls more permanent.  But this is just a demonstration. That’s why the tissue paper is used around the base and face to protect the client’s skin form the chemicals.

The last thing on the set is the fourth section and that is used to demonstrate finger waves. Now this technique was very difficult and confusing to get the hang of. It looks so simple when it’s complete. You need lots and lots of gel and basically maneuver the hair pinching between your fingers to make the wave shape. Once I got the hand of it became easier to do. My teacher was impressed how quickly I got it. It takes some students a while to get it correctly. I was pleased at myself. When you reach the ends all we did was pin it up using pin curls.
